Wind is the most common way to ruin an otherwise perfect take. It doesn't sound like "noise" so much as a low, swelling rumble that swallows the bottom half of the voice — and by the time you hear it in headphones, the interview is over.
Why wind sounds so bad
Wind doesn't create sound the way a fan does. Gusts of air physically push the microphone's diaphragm back and forth, producing low-frequency pressure changes — rumble below 100 Hz, sometimes as deep as 20 Hz. Two things make it nasty:
- It modulates. Wind comes in gusts, so the rumble swells and fades. Steady noise is easy to filter; breathing, uneven rumble is not.
- It hides under everything. Speech fundamentals live around 100–300 Hz, so aggressive low-cut filters that kill wind also hollow out the voice.
This is why a simple EQ cut rarely fixes wind, and why recordings with heavy wind gusts over speech are the hardest cleanup job that exists.
Rescue a recording that already has wind
For light-to-moderate wind (the voice is clearly louder than the gusts), AI denoising is the practical option. Modern models separate voice from non-voice content rather than just filtering frequencies, so they reduce gusts without gutting the speaker's low end.
- Upload the audio or video file to Remove Background Noise — the MP4/MOV path is handy for field footage.
- Listen to the 30-second preview on headphones. Check specifically that the speaker's voice doesn't sound thin after cleanup.
- If the preview is good, unlock the full file.
When to give up: if individual gusts are as loud as the voice, or the mic was actually buffeted (you'll hear thumps and pops, not rumble), cleanup can only make it less bad. Re-recording — or at least re-recording the affected lines — is usually faster than fighting it.
The manual route: high-pass + careful reduction
If you prefer manual control or the AI left the voice thin:
- High-pass filter at 80–100 Hz. This removes pure rumble below speech. Push it higher only if wind remains — at 120 Hz+ you'll start thinning most voices.
- In Audacity, capture a noise profile from a gust-only moment and apply gentle Noise Reduction (6–10 dB).
- A low-shelf cut around 100–150 Hz can tuck remaining rumble back without touching the voice's body.
Keep wind out of the next recording
Prevention is genuinely easy and mostly free:
- Use a foam windscreen outdoors. The gray foam ball that ships with most mics. Indoors it does nothing; outdoors it cuts wind by 10–20 dB. A deadcat (furry cover) handles serious wind.
- Turn away from the wind. Position the speaker so wind hits their back — the mic, behind them, sits in the body's wind shadow.
- Get the mic close. Every halving of distance lets you drop gain, which drops everything else, wind included.
- Shield with your body or a car door. Interviewers have hidden behind open car doors for decades for a reason.
- Record 5 seconds of wind-only sound before starting. If you do need manual cleanup, that segment is your noise profile.
Bottom line
Light wind over a clear voice: AI cleanup in two minutes, preview first. Heavy buffeting gusts: no tool saves it — plan a reshoot. And a $5 foam windscreen will do more for your outdoor audio than any software ever will.
