If you record at home, steady mechanical noise is almost guaranteed to be in your takes: the computer's fan spinning up, the air conditioner cycling on, the fridge humming down the hall. Here's the good news — steady noise is the easiest kind to remove. It doesn't change, which means both AI models and traditional filters can subtract it almost completely.
Know your enemy: three different "hums"
"Hum" covers three distinct sounds, and the fix differs for each:
- Broadband whoosh — fan and AC airflow. A smooth wash of noise spread across all frequencies. Easy for AI; moderate for manual tools.
- Tonal hum — the 50 Hz or 60 Hz mains buzz from power supplies, plus its harmonics at 120/180/240 Hz. Very easy: notch filters or a de-hummer kill it precisely.
- Electronic whine — a high, thin tone from monitors, chargers, or USB grounding issues. Also tonal; a narrow EQ cut at the right frequency removes it.

- The fan speed keeps changing. Gaming laptops cycle fan speed constantly, which means the noise isn't steady anymore. The AI handles this better than Audacity's static noise profile.
